Earth Day Electronic Recycling event scheduled

The City of South Padre Island Environmental Health Services Department (EHSD), Republic Services and RDA Technologies are hosting an Earth Day Electronic Recycling Event on Saturday, April 20 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Community Center, located at 4501 Padre Blvd.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, consumers and businesses discarded televisions, computers, cell phones and hard copy peripherals (including printers, scanners, faxes) totaling 2.37 million tons. Approximately 25 percent of these electronics were collected for recycling, with the remainder disposed of primarily in landfills, where the precious metals cannot be recovered. Chemicals such as lead, cadmium and mercury found in e-waste are extremely hazardous to our health. The goal for EHSD and their partners is to provide an opportunity for safe and responsible recycling of unwanted electronics.

“This is a great opportunity to properly dispose of your electronics,” said Victor Baldovinos, Environmental Health director. “The community will benefit from this event to reduce waste and the negative impact that irresponsible disposal may cause.”

Bring all your electronics and regular recycling to this one-stop Earth Day Electronic Recycling Event. For further questions contact the EHSD at (956) 761-8123.

Freddie Mac: Rising Mortgage Rates DO NOT Lead To Falling Home Prices

Recently, Freddie Mac published an Insight Report titled Nowhere to go but up? How increasing mortgage rates could affect housing. The report focused on the impact the projected rise in mortgage rates might have on the housing market this year.

Many believe that an increase in mortgage rates will cause a slowdown in purchases which would, in turn, lead to a fall in house values. Ultimately, however, prices are determined by supply and demand and while rising mortgage rates may slow demand, they also affect supply.
